& TOK Teacher
Meghan Guss is an MYP & DP English Language and Literature Teacher who brings extensive international experience as well as a deep, broad knowledge of both the MYP and DP to KSI Montenegro. In addition to teaching Language and Literature classes, Meghan has also experience of TOK, Journalism and Film Studies in previous IB schools.

Meghan’s appreciation of teaching and learning began to develop at a young age as both parents were teachers, and it was through her mother that she was influenced, inspired and deeply moved by literature and writing. Her father, a band director, taught her piano and trumpet; their gift for drawing out the best from students, along with high expectations, hard work and humour are all traits she observed and feels shaped her into the teacher she is today. Meghan grew up in rural Iowa, USA, but at the age of 12 accompanied her mother and her class on a literary trip to England; Meghan identifies this as one of the most formative experiences of her young life, kindling a wonder for the world and other cultures. At college
she studied abroad at University College Cork in Ireland, and after graduating taught English in Moscow. After returning to teach in Virginia, USA, and seeking a new challenge, Meghan moved to an IB School in Brooklyn, New York City. Following a year earning her Masters degree in Creative Writing in England, she returned to IB teaching in Italy at the International School of Genoa. Before making the move here to KSIM and Montenegro, Meghan taught for the past couple of years at the prestigious ‘Robert College’ in Istanbul, Turkey.

In addition to being a teacher, Meghan is a writer and poet and has pursued her own education in writing during her teaching career. She has attended numerous poetry workshops, and has published several poems in various magazines and on websites. Presently, Meghan is working on her first book of poetry, and is really looking forward to sharing her experiences and passion for writing with her students at KSIM - We are absolutely delighted that Meghan has joined our community and believe the wealth and diversity of academic, professional and personal experiences she brings will make her an strong asset to the culture and environment of our school.

Recommendations for Meghan refers to her students being fully engaged and enjoying their learning experiences. She has an outstanding grasp of her subject matter and asks students to aim for deeper analysis and awareness of what they are doing and more importantly, why. Meghan provides lively, differentiated material and resources that challenge and engage any learner profile. And, as a published writer and poet herself is recognised as having the rare ability to nurture students into using sophisticated writing skills confidently. In the words of one former principal, “Meghan is simply wonderful and I admire her ability to inspire students to do their best work with encouragement and warm engagement.”

Mr. Paul is our Year 5 and 6 Class Teacher, and joined KSIM from an IB School in Muscat, Oman in 2019.  Originally from Liverpool, England, he worked in a UK primary school and was a Year 5 teacher before teaching internationally. His desire to live and work within an international community was a motivating factor in Paul’s decision to leave the UK and to teach in IB schools. His interest in different cultures has also been a catalyst for him to learn different languages; he describes himself as “modestly apt” in Italian, with a basic understanding of French, and aspects of Arabic. Paul is also a keen sportsman who trains regularly and practices Mixed Martial Arts, as well as Judo, Greco- Roman Wrestling and Karate, in which he was the British Kata and Kumite Champion in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Being from the city of Liverpool, it isn’t surprising that he has a passion for football, and Liverpool FC!  Also a published fantasy fiction author, Paul’s passion for literature as well as sport has found a welcome home at KSI Montenegro.

Ryan Kummins is highly skilled and experienced Mathematics, Science and Design teacher.  Originally from Atlanta, Georgia in the USA, Ryan graduated with an education degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and also holds a Masters degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from Atlantic University in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ryan’s experiences as a teacher have seen him work with students across the entire Primary and Middle School age ranges, although for more than ten years his experiences have focused predominantly on teaching Year 6 to Year 9 Mathematics, Science and Project Based Learning (Design) classes.  He made the move to Montenegro, with his wife Kate, daughter Marissa, and dog Presley (as in Elvis!) in 2020 following 10 years on the Dutch Caribbean Island of Curaçao.

In addition to being an extremely talented and successful Middle School teacher, Ryan also enjoys many extracurricular hobbies and interests - He has played the drums since he was ten years old, and has regularly performed in groups with other teachers for school functions. In all of his schools, he has been an active participant in, and organiser of, many extra-curricular activities that stretch and challenge the young people he has worked with. Ryan has a passion for the outdoors and is excited to have the opportunity to live in, and explore, a country with as much natural beauty as Montenegro - having lived in the Caribbean, clearly Ryan couldn’t miss the opportunity to become certified for open water SCUBA diving! He also has a life-long passion for baseball and coached teams in the U.S. and Curaçao.

Mr. Ryan’s great strengths as a creative teacher ensure he meets and support the needs of all the students in his classes. He maintains a fun, purposeful learning environment, while establishing expectations for high standards. His lessons are always strong and aim to bring out the best in his children - his lessons are designed with the end in mind, allowing students to understand concepts and content at a deeper level; his classes are engaging and often involve hands-on learning that provide interesting, differentiated activities.

Tony Rubino is our DP Geography, and MYP I&S and Design Teacher.  Tony is from Canada and has more than 10 years of varied and meaningful experience teaching experiences internationally both in Taiwan and South Korea. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Adolescent Education from Daemen College in Amherst, New York, a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning Degree from Queen's University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Laurentian University in Canada. During his time working overseas, he has taught Geography and Social Studies, Art, Design and Graphic Design, as well as Earth and Life Sciences, Health and Physical Education to Middle and High School classes.

Reflecting on his own teaching philosophy, Tony strives to create an environment that is challenging but non-competitive, and structured yet creative. Before becoming a teacher, Tony worked as a City Planner and Open Space Designer. His education and experience in this field helped him to solidify his strong belief in the concepts of collaboration, transparency and most importantly community. Working in the field of City and Urban Planning had been a dream for Tony since he had interned at a City Planning Department in High School. The blend of hands on creativity, with technical challenges resinated and after graduating he worked both in the private and public sectors for a number of years. During this time, Tony would regularly volunteer as a guest speaker or guest teacher at several local schools.

Through this experience, he eventually came to realise that the time he spent in the classroom left him feeling far more fulfilled than his work as a planner did. Eventually, he decided to make a change and he took the leap to return to University and become a teacher.  Mr. Tony consistently strived to create enriching and supportive learning experiences and opportunities for his students, and in addition to having students think critically and creatively, he also understands that a teacher cannot be effective without building strong working relationships with students.  His classes and lessons are interactive and student-centered with a focus on the development of creativity and higher level cognitive skills on top of any required content knowledge.
